Disability Living Allowance (DLA)

DLA is a non-means-tested benefit for children with disabilities that need help with care or supervision.

What is Disability Living Allowance?

Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is extra financial support which helps with the cost of a child living with a long-term health condition, disability or illness. It has two components — a care component and a mobility component — and you may qualify for one or both.

It’s tax-free and not means-tested, and you can spend it however you like on whatever helps most.

It is available in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Are we Eligible?

You might be eligible if:

You have a child
under 16 years old.
You are a resident in the UK
and have lived there for 6
of the last 12 months.*
Parenting your child is
significantly more demanding
than for another child the
same age.
Your child needs care or
supervision due to a health
condition or mental/
physical disability.
Your child has walking difﬁculty
or needs help getting around.

* Residence includes Channel Islands, Ireland, Isle of Man. Presence test is shorter if child is under 3 years old

At 16 years old, a person is no longer eligible for DLA.  They must transition to Personal Independence Payment (PIP).
